The idea behind this project was to try and create a system for the two books, so that they would work with each other. However, the project also looked to make each book uniquely identifiable with each of the designers traits. Rather than using one of both of their designs in the cover, the use of a color grid would allow to tie both covers together, but the grid within itself could have variations. And so the round grid was assigned to Eames whose design was characteristically more round, while the square was set for Knoll, who was a much more angular designer. In the end neither uses furniture, but rather the silhouettes of people interacting with furniture, so it becomes a more universal symbol rather than one specific to either of the designers.
